Wrinkles Around The Mouth
Wrinkles around the mouth (perioral wrinkles) is a common problem for many people. Perioral wrinkles are the fine or deep lines that occur around the mouth and lips. As we get older this area is often one of the first to develop wrinkles. There are many reasons why people get wrinkles around the mouth. Unfortunately these wrinkles progressively worsen with time, often making individuals look older. No matter how accepting one may be of the natural aging process, perioral wrinkles are the least tolerated.
Smoking cigarettes is another contributor to wrinkles around the mouth. This is common because the puckering the lips over and over to take a hit of the cigarette makes the wrinkles show, and over time when the elasticity is gone in your skin the wrinkles will not go away.
Too much sun can contribute to facial wrinkles; this is because over time the sun can dry out the fatty tissue in the skin that makes it elastic. This will in turn not only give you wrinkles around your lips but also will give you them around your eyes, and other places you don’t want them.
Another reason for wrinkles around the mouth is because the layers of skin and fat are a lot thinner in and around the mouth area. Over time the elasticity of that skin and fat will be lost and that is when wrinkles form.
These suggestions may help to delay the formation of wrinkles around the mouth:
- Smoking; when a person smokes the excessive puckering of the lips can result in wrinkles around the mouth.
- Application of sunscreen is important in maintaining a healthier skin, we know that sun can damage the elasticity of our skin.
- Exercising can prevent premature aging which will decrease the chances that you will get wrinkles.
Fortunately peri-oral wrinkles are treatable. Laser skin resurfacing and dermabrasion offer a long-term or permanent solution following a single office procedure. Temporary treatment using injectable fillers along with Botox® are also available and immediately achieve excellent results allowing resumption of normal activities after the procedure.
Medical needling is another technique used to effectively eliminate wrinkles around the mouth. This procedure is mainly effective in patients with fine lines and moderate deep lines. For deeper lines other modalities maybe more effective. This procedure may be repeated 3-6 months apart for better results. A skin care regimen of vitamin A and C is incorporated in the treatment for preparation of the procedure. Depending on your skin and your goals Dr. Bolourian will assist you in deciding on a treatment plan that best suits your needs during your consultation.
