Periodontal Treatment Overview
Our practice provides a variety of surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary.
Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy often precedes surgical therapy. This is done to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and also to help limit the areas requiring surgery.
Non-Invasive/Minimally Invasive Procedures
Dr. Eslami is a firm believer in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner in treatment of her patient’s periodontal health. The American Association of Periodontics endorses this philosophy. At our practice we emphasize the importance of periodontal health maintenance. This is often accomplished through non-surgical periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planning (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus [tartar] from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth roots to remove bacterial toxins), followed by adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials and host modulation, as needed on a case-by-case basis. Most patients do not require any further active treatment. Sometimes, whennon-surgical therapy cannot restore periodontal health, surgery may be indicated to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases. Ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health is recommended in either case and to facilitate oral hygiene practices.
Periodontal Plastic/Cosmetic Procedures
These procedures are specially designed to cover unsightly, sensitive or exposed root surfaces and to prevent future gum recession. There are proven methods available if you are unhappy with the appearance of short unsightly teeth. Periodontal plastic surgery procedures by Dr. Eslami and cosmetic dentistry by your restorative dentist can help.
Cosmetic surgery has become more popular than ever before especially now that more Americans are living longer and aging more gracefully with the help of plastic surgery. The periodontal plastic surgery field has been impacted by this trend as it has experienced a significant shift toward cosmetic-related surgery to help make smiles last a lifetime. First impressions are everything! And you can make a great first impression when meeting people on an important job interview or a special occasion.Whatever the reason, periodontal plastic procedures will give you a perfect smile.
A recent poll of 253 consumers conducted by the American Academy of Periodontology found the following:
- 50 percent consider the smile the first facial feature they noticed.
- 80 percent are not happy with their smile
- Respondents were seven times more likely to have periodontal, smile enhancement procedures, over face-lifts, and five times more likely over-eyelid surgeries.
Cosmetic periodontal procedures may include crown lengthening. With this procedure excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to more than one tooth, to even your gum line, and will create a beautiful smile.
Soft Tissue Graft (Gum Grafting) is another example of cosmetic procedure performed by Dr. Eslami. This is used to cover unattractive tooth roots, reduce gum recession and protect the roots from decay and eventual loss.
